Executive Chairman, DDB Mudra Group

An Economics graduate from Loyola Chennai, Madhukar studied Management at XLRI Jamshedpur. He has more than three decades of experience in Advertising and Marketing Services and has spent close to twenty five years in erstwhile Mudra now DDB Mudra Group, in two separate stints. Under his leadership, Mudra transformed itself from an Advertising Agency into one of India’s leading Integrated Marketing Communications Groups. In between his two stints at DDB Mudra Group, Madhukar led Bates India as its CEO and was instrumental in the acquisition and successful integration of Clarion.

In 2012, Madhukar helped Omnicom in acquiring Mudra Group and in steering it’s integration into DDB Worldwide as the DDB Mudra Group. Since then he has been leading the group’s aggressive growth agenda – organically and through strategic partnerships/acquisitions.

In 2013, Interbrand, the world’s leading brand consultancy also appointed Madhukar as Chairman, Interbrand India, responsible for mentoring and partnering the young Interbrand India team.

Madhukar has actively participated in and led several industry bodies. He has served as the President of the AAAI (Advertising Agencies Association of India) and Chairman of ASCI (The Advertising Standards Council of India). He was also the Chairman of AdAsia 2011, India’s largest Marketing Congress, which was held in New Delhi.

Currently he is on the Board of ABC (The Audit Bureau of Circulations) and is an Executive Committee Member of AAAI. He is also the Chairman of the Mudra Foundation and serves as Chairperson of the Governing Council of MICA, India’s foremost Strategic Marketing and Communications Institute. In 2013, Madhukar became an Executive Board member of Plan India.

After having lived in different parts of the country, Madhukar currently resides in Mumbai. His love of the outdoors has also led him to travel extensively. Apart from several driving excursions in different parts of India, he and his wife, Shalini, have enjoyed numerous driving holidays across the globe; in Australia, New Zealand, US, Europe and Africa. His love for the wildlife has taken him repeatedly to Africa. He is passionate about sports, be it cricket, football or badminton to name a few alongside being a keen lover of history, films, theatre and more importantly, food! Over the last decade, he has completed several half marathons. Not by running, but by walking the entire distance in under 3 hours.
He is energized and motivated by his family. His wife Shalini, an accomplished HR professional and now a CEO Coach, is an excellent singer and gives music to his life. His four children have an eclectic mix of interest and profession.
After a decade of qualitative research, his daughter Mitali is now completing the Grande Diplome in both Cuisine and Patisserie at Le Cordon Bleu in London. A graduate of Ross Business School in Michigan, Dishank is with Dell in Austin, Texas. A passionate conservationist, wild life enthusiast and photographer-Maanav, when he is not tracking Jaguars in the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil; he is studying for his Masters in Wildlife Sciences, in Oregon. Akanksha, the brand person of the family, is a Fashion Stylist & Writer, with stints in Vogue, Grazia and Elle. She is enrolled at Central Saint Martin, in London, for her Masters in Fashion.
Madhukar takes great pride in his journey spanning over decades, in Marketing Services and Advertising. Apart from growing personally and professionally in Mudra, and now leading the DDB Mudra Group, he takes pride in the acquisition of his alma-mater Clarion, bringing Bates and ZenithMedia into the Country, facilitating the entry of Abbys in Goafest, opening the doors for Media Agencies into AAAI, chairing the highly successful AdAsia 2011 in Delhi, among other milestones.
However, what gives him the greatest satisfaction is his role and involvement over the last decade in building MICA into India’s foremost Strategic Marketing & Communications Business School. Helping Plan India reach an impact the lives of 10 million children as a part of their Country Strategic Plan, is also very close to his heart.
