We had an amazing conversation at the ‘Voice of Change’ roadshow themed: “Gender Portrayal from 3 seconds to 3 hours”. It was all about how we, in advertising, can push for a gender-inclusive future. In collaboration with UNICEF, the Geena Davis Institute analysed India’s top 1,000 ads. While women were frequently featured, the study revealed a troubling pattern—female characters were overwhelmingly portrayed in stereotypical roles, such as caregivers and homemakers. This highlights urgent need for gender-sensitive storytelling in Indian advertising.

Vanaja Pillai, Head - DEI, DDB Mudra Group led a fantastic panel with Josy Paul (BBDO), Supriya Srinivasan (Kenvue), Amit Kekre (TBWA), Madhuboni Bhattacharya (BBDO) & Priya Nathan (DDB Mudra Group). We dug into some eye-opening stats, like the time women and men spent on housework (men spend just 19 minutes on housework, while women devote an average of 5 hours) and talked about how much work is yet to be done to head towards a gender inclusive world. The discussion made it clear that while every household is different, change begins with simple yet powerful steps toward awareness.

The biggest takeaway? Partnerships are key. As content creators, we have the power to challenge outdated norms and build a more equitable world.
